How many licenses do I need to be a travel nurse in America?

Defined Tag:

This is a question that is asked often by many nurses living in the US who wish to become a travel nurse. In this article we will look at American Travel Nursing and what licenses are required in order to become one.

In the US the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has devised a plan that they call "the mutual recognition model". This means that you will only need one license in order to practice across state boundaries. There are other States that have adopted this model and have entered into a compact by which they agree to recognize the licenses of nurses from other states which are also involved. Below are some answer relating to some key questions with regard to the mutual license recognition scheme.

1. How does the Interstate Compact work?
It works in much the same way as a driver's license in that a nurse who is say licensed in Utah would be able to practice in any state which has passed the compact. But that nurse must abide by the State where she is working nurse practice act and other regulations. So it is important that any nurse working in another state should find out what these are before commencing her job.

2. Which states are involved in the Interstate Compact?
At present there are 13 states involved and they are Arkansas, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Caroline, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. This means that any nurse from these states can legally practice in any of the others which are involved.

3. Under the Interstate Compact, will a nurse need more than one license in order to practice outside her home state?
The answer to this is that if both your home state and the state that you wish to practice in have passed the interstate compact then you will have a licence from your home state and not need one for the state where you will be working. However if the other state is not part of the interstate compact then you will need a license from that state as well.
