Around the World with Travel Nursing
Benefits Travel nursing presents the ability to travel and earn higher wages. Since the nurses are employees of staffing companies, the majority of these recruiting companies or agencies, offer medical and 401(k) benefits, pay travel costs, provide housing and food stipends. The remuneration in this profession is directly proportional to experience, specialty, and location. Travel nurses usually make from $20 to $38 per hour, and if one believes the staffing agencies, travel nursing can even generate up to $500 per day or $2500 per week! Some staffing companies report that many of their nurses’ earn twice as much as a staff nurse. Hospitals, on average, pay 20% more for traveling nurses than for permanent employees, inclusive with other benefits. One of the key benefits in travel nursing is that the nurses can decide where to work and when. This practically makes this field akin to freelancing with no monotonous routine. Regulations like compulsory overtime, weekends and holidays do not apply to travel nursing. These nurses have the freedom to set their own pace, and work as much or as little as they want. One advantage that may be discussed by the staffing companies is that the travel nurses will also have more opportunities to solidify their education. Many of these high paying positions are with major teaching institutions and may offer the nurse free tuitions to further her specialty. The greatest advantage offered in travel nursing is free high-quality housing. Travel nurses are usually provided with sumptuous, well-furnished shared accommodations in a two-bedroom apartment or condominium. On certain assignments, the travel nurses even get their own one-bedroom apartment. Premium household appliances are also provided at no extra charge. If travel nurses prefer to arrange their own accommodation, the staffing company provides a magnificent housing allowance. Traveling nursing takes a 'breed' apart from the average nurse. They must be flexible and willing to adapt to any environment.
