Nursing Schools - Foundation of Health Care

In order to understand the function of nursing schools, one must have a clear definition of the term nurse. "A nurse (from Latin nutrix, "wet nurse") is a health care professional who is engaged in the practice of nursing."(Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). The educational institutions, responsible for training the nursing professionals, may vary their training and requirements, depending on the country the school is located in. Worldwide there are more than 350 masters degrees that can be obtained in the nursing field. Although each school may have its own curriculum, for the masters degree, the ultimate end of each program is to provide a highly skilled and educated professional in the nursing field.

Nursing is one of the most satisfying careers to pursue, but is not what you see in movies or soap operas. It is hard work, and learning to become a nurse requires dedication and long hours of study and preparation. Unlike many other disciplines in which the academic curriculum has foundation courses with many related subject areas, nursing schools offer courses usually built on one another. As such, a weakness in one area may cause academic problems in the remainder of the nursing sequence. In nursing schools, some programs are specially designed for students who are already registered nurses, but want to give their career that extra boost. The students should make certain whichever school they attend, is accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLN)

Due to the increase in the population worldwide there is an unceasing demand for the nursing professional. The United States Department of Health and Human Services (a.k.a. HHS) has estimated that the shortage for nurses, in the United States alone, will increase by over twelve percent over the next decade. For prospective nursing graduates that represent an astounding opportunity, to safely secure their career both on a personal and financial level. The opportunities presented are all the more, for students graduating from top nursing schools.

This astonishing growth and need for well-trained professionals, in the nursing field, has also increased the demand for accredited educational institutions. It is extremely imperative, for the aspiring student to perform due diligence on the credentials of the school they are considering.

Many of the higher education institutions have also instituted classes on the World Wide Web. These programs are especially beneficial for those nurses desiring to further their education and or unable to go back to the nursing schools of their choice.
